So after a very comfortable night sleep at Glasney Parks, which felt more like a holiday park designed by IKEA executives rather than your typical student digs. The second day of my interview/assessment week kicked off with perceptually less tension and apprehension than the previous days introduction. The first speaker was another self-made and entrepreneurial leader of another Cornish based company. Toby Parkins MD of UKNetWeb a web design and development firm gave a detailed talk on the rise, application and challenges facing modern businesses looking to pursue and facilitate two-way communication through 'Social Media' sites.
Social media and 'web 2.0' are both buzz terms which are often paraded as the future of the modern networked society, but I felt the strength of Tobys presentation was very much in his focus on the present and the assertion that "all companies" need to engage with their customer community through social media forms. Its certainly made me more aware of the use of social media as pragmatic and cost effective tool, whether that be in a marketing, PR or purely networking context. So given that thought, I decided to incorporate as much of my new found knowledge into ensuring that I strive for what I'm calling 'integration with the robots'! Starting with the creation of a twitter account later this evening, and below my rather futile attempt to bookmark to Toby 'about me page' on UKNetWeb:

P.S I was sold when I found out that the company offices where situated overlooking St Agnes Cove in Cornwall!
