Madeira / Fuerteventura Sailing

At the eleventh hour my friend Harry invited me to join him and his girlfriend Imogen onboard a leg of their round the world sailing adventure. Here are a few pictures of the preceding days spent exploring the idylic islands of Madeira and the ensuing 40 hour, 300 nautical mile crossing to Fuerteventura in the Canary islands.

We were sailing on 'Hebe' a stunning 55ft Discovery yacht crafted in Southampton and owned by the very hospitable Andrew and Janie, who seemed more than happy to allow a reprobate stowaway like myself onboard (surfboards included). The yacht is about to embark on its first large crossing to St Lucia in the Carribean, before heading off into the pacific in the New Year - Good watch guys!

A moody sunset at Quinta de Lorde marina
The mountainous and surf filled north coast
Crumbling art deco signage in Funchal city
Sheer Cliffs
Our hire car (*not quite)
Sunset from the deck of Hebe, overlooking Madeira
Sunrise illuminating the sails
Harry at the Helm
Hebe charging
A room with a view - sunrise
Who needs a beach when you have oiled teak under your feet and a wave within reach!

Annapurna

“I felt as though I were plunging into something new and quite abnormal. I had the strangest and most vivid impressions, such as I had never before known in the mountains. There was something unnatural in the way I saw Lachenal and everything around us. I smiled to myself at the paltriness of our efforts, for I could stand apart and watch myself making these efforts. But all sense of exertion was gone, as though there were no longer any gravity. This diaphanous landscape, this quintessence of purity--these were not the mountains I knew: they were the mountains of my dreams"

Adventures of the North

I recently spent a couple of weeks in Scotland dodging rain squalls, surfing reefbreaks and scaring myself on mountains. Here are some photos of my trip:
